Frequently asked questions
Short answers to the questions people ask most before applying. Agency pages always take precedence.
Is RAII a grant or a loan?
It depends on who you are. Business applicants generally receive repayable contributions, which work like interest-free loans repaid after the project. Not-for-profit organizations generally receive non-repayable contributions. The exact terms are set by each regional development agency.
How much funding can I get?
Each agency sets its own contribution limits and cost-share percentage, and they are not always published up front. Agencies fund a share of eligible costs and the applicant covers the rest with confirmed cash financing. Check your agency's application guide for the current figures before budgeting.
Can I apply if I am a sole proprietor?
In Southern Ontario, business applicants must be incorporated and apply under the legal name on their articles of incorporation. Other agencies have similar expectations. If you are not incorporated, talk to your agency before preparing an application.
Does buying an off-the-shelf AI tool count as AI adoption?
Adoption projects involve integrating AI into how the business operates, which can include purchasing and implementing existing products. The project needs defined outcomes, incremental costs and a start and end date. Simply paying for a subscription without an integration project is unlikely to qualify.
What is technology readiness level 6?
TRL 6 means the technology has been demonstrated in a relevant environment, past the prototype-in-the-lab stage. FedDev Ontario requires projects to be at TRL 6 or higher. Early-stage research is not eligible under RAII.
Can a consultant submit the application for me?
A consultant can help you prepare, but in Southern Ontario the authorized project and financial contacts must be signing officers of the applicant, and consultant fees for preparing the application are not an eligible cost.
Can I start the project before I hear back?
No. The project cannot start before the intake closes, and costs incurred before the intake deadline are not eligible. Wait for a decision before committing spend you expect the program to cover.
Is RAII.ca the official program site?
No. RAII.ca is an independent information site and is not operated by the Government of Canada. The official page is at ised-isde.canada.ca, and applications go to your regional development agency.
